Milestone’s film closely followed the novel, which had been published just two years earlier, and his battle scenes were remarkable for the era (it won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director), but the melodramatic acting makes it unwatchable today. These qualities make it a tough nut for would-be adapters to crack, though three directors have tried: Lewis Milestone in 1930, Delbert Mann in a CBS TV movie in 1979, and now Edward Berger for Netflix. All Quiet on the Western Front may be the best war novel ever written, a work told entirely in first person and present tense that evokes the myriad aspects of combat-its gruesome horrors, routine banalities, feverish otherworldliness, and fervent camaraderie-with engrossing vividity, in language at once sparse and explicit, though never gratuitously graphic or sentimental.

By the turn of the millennium, FOSS developers had created the GNU/Linux operating system and several other significant products. In the 1980s, largely due to the activities of MIT programmer Richard Stallman, a discourse of "free software" emerged in opposition to the perceived commercialization of hitherto widely available code, in particular the Unix operating system developed at Bell Labs. Software soon became commercialized, of course, but traditions of openness persisted, notably in universities. Electronic computers were originally sold without software and users collaborated to exchange information and code, as the name of the 1950s IBM user group SHARE suggests. "Free" signifies liberty as well as the absence of cost, and "open source" means that the secrets of the software's code are exposed. Typically, FOSS can be used, modified, and redistributed without the hindrance of, or payment to, its original authors. The term "free and open source software" (FOSS) does not primarily refer to software written for a specific application or to a particular approach to software production, but rather to the manner of its distribution. Set in 1935, when guards actually lived on Alcatraz Island with their families, Choldenko's second novel brings humor to the complexities of family dynamics and illuminates the real struggle of a kid trying to free himself from the "good boy" stance he's taken his whole life. His other story, “The Wendigo,” also captures a sense of a predatory natural world, but nowhere near so exquisitely as in “The Willows.” No one can imbue the natural world with quite the same sense of terrifying, pagan dread as Blackwood. This part of the river is described as a “region of singular loneliness and desolation…covered by a vast sea of low willow-bushes” (27). In this story, two canoeists journey down the Danube and wind up stranded on a sandy island in the middle of a swampy part of the river that arrests their progress toward Budapest. No weird tale that I have read captures a sense of dread and impending doom so subtly and beautifully in its descriptions of the natural world as “The Willows” by Algernon Blackwood (1907), the third story included in The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Tales.
